The Barcelona Via Laietana Hotels available all offer a great location close to the Barri Gotic and range from luxurious 5 star hotels to mid-range 4 and 2 star and very basic hostels.
Running from Plaça Urquinaona past Barcelona Cathedral down to the Port, Via
Laietana cut through the Gothic Quarter when it was built at the start
of the 20th century.
There are famous sights on the Barri Gòtic side of the street and hidden treasures in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina and La Ribera, better known these days as El Born.
Of the accommodation on offer, there are two very upmarket Barcelona Via Laietana Hotels - Ohla Hotel and Grand Hotel Central.
I'd describe Confortel Almirante, Exe Laietana Palace and Barcelona Hotel Colonial as very good mid-range hotels whilst Hostal Fontanella, Pensión Casa Blanca and particularly G and G are more basic but in an excellent location nonetheless.
As with all my Ciutat Vella accommodation pages, the listings begin close to Plaça Catalunya or rather Plaça Urquinaona in this case and work down to the Port.
Via Laietana 71, 2º, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Located on the corner of Plaça Urquinaona itself just a short walk from Plaça Catalunya and La Rambla, Hostal Fontanella is within walking distance of many of Barcelona city centre's most important sights.
Set in a renovated in an 1881 Modernista building, rooms at the Fontanella are modern and bright with private or shared bathroom facilities, heating, a fan and a TV.
There is free Wi-Fi throughout, some rooms have a balcony and there is also a vending machine serving free hot drinks.
Hostal Fontanella's main advantage, though, is its excellent location at a very modest price.
Via Laietana, 54, Ciutat Vella, 08001 Barcelona
A little further down Via Laietana on the corner of Carrer de les Jonqueres next to the metro entrance, G and G backs onto the neighbourhood of Sant Pere and the marvellous Palau de la Música Catalana.
It offers modern air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a small fridge and a private bathroom just outside the room.
Guests at G and G have access to a shared kitchen, which includes a toaster, coffee maker, fridge and microwave.
Once again this is a great location and many of the rooms have balconies and views of the Sant Pere neighbourhood.
Via Laietana, 49, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Almost directly opposite G and G but right at the other end of the price range, you'll find the magnificent Ohla Hotel - one of Barcelona's most fashionable establishments.
One of Ohla Hotel's high points is the rooftop pool and bar with spectacular views over Barcelona shown in the picture.
Ohla Hotel’s elegant rooms include a plasma-screen TV, free Wi-Fi and an iPod dock and the bathrooms come with bathrobes and slippers.
Some rooms have views over the historic Gothic Quarter and I suggest you book a room at the back rather than overlooking the rather busy Via Laietana.
Guests can also enjoy a cocktail and hang out with Barcelona beautiful people in the extremely chic lounge-bar and the Michelin-starred Saüc restaurant, which features minimal design and serves creative versions of traditional Catalan cuisine, has an excellent reputation.
Via Laietana, 42, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
With the Cathedral almost opposite and Sant Pere Mes Baix and the Santa Caterina area right behind, the Confortel Almirante is also extremely well located between Urquinaona and Jaume I metro stations.
It has a fitness centre and bar and rooms feature free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a pillow menu.
The rooms have modern furnishings and many have views over the Gothic Quarter.
Information on the surrounding area is also available, and there is an internet terminal in reception.
The buffet breakfast looks extremely good but Confortel Almirante doesn't have a restaurant.
However, the location is fantastic and with the eateries of El Born so close you certainly won't go hungry.
Via Laietana, 30, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Described by The Guardian as 'One of the five best European new hip hotels', despite being 4 Stars, the Grand Hotel Central is at the top end of the market.
In a brilliant location facing the Cathedral and a section of the old Roman Wall, this attractive design hotel is housed in a historic building and enjoys fantastic views of the Gothic Quarter from its rooftop infinity pool.
It offers stylish air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen satellite TV and hydromassage bath, as well as a DVD player, Wi-Fi connection, iPod docking station and sound system.
The Grand Central Hotel’s restaurant, Ávalon, serves innovative Catalan food and there is also a trendy rooftop bar, a fitness centre and massage services.
Definitely highly recommended and no surprise that it is one of Barcelona's upcoming hotels - along with Hotel 1898 on The Ramblas, probably the best 4 Star Hotel in Town!
Via Laietana, 23 3º, 2ª, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
Slightly further down Via Laietana located right beside Barcelona’s Jaume I Metro Station, which is on the Yellow L4 Metro Line, Pensión Casa Blanca is a lot more basic but the location is still excellent.
With Carrer Princesa leading to the Parc de la Ciutadella and Carrer Argenteria that runs down to El Born and Santa Maria del Mar facing you, you're also a short walk from Plaça de Sant Jaume and the back of the Cathedral.
Featuring basic décor, rooms offer flat-screen TV, a fan and private bathroom and some of them have a seating area and a balcony.
Given its proximity to the Barri Gòtic and El Born, Pension Casa Blanca really is a great choice for the budget traveller.
Via Laietana, 17, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
A little further down and backing onto another section of the Roman Wall, Exe Laietana Palace is set in a refurbished neo-classical building.
I have to say that all of the 4 Star hotels on Via Laietana look pretty good to me and the Exe Laietana Palace is no exception.
Its soundproofed rooms have flat-screen satellite TV and hydro-massage showers and some have views of the Roman wall, while others have a sloping glass roof.
All have a safe, minibar, free Wi-Fi andair conditioning, and as usual room service is available.
A buffet breakfast is served until 11 am, which is great for those with a tendency to oversleep, and the Laietana Palace also has a pleasant bar.
Via Laietana, 3, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
By the time you get down to Barcelona Hotel Colonial, the atmosphere has changed and you're looking more towards La Barceloneta and the Port than the Gothic Quarter.
However, this elegant hotel is set in an impressive, colonial, stone building with a clock tower and is still only a short walk from Plaça Sant Jaume, the Cathedral and El Born.
Hotel Colonial’s bright, air-conditioned rooms feature wooden floors and have a flat-screen TV and minibar.
A buffet breakfast is served in the Colonial Hotel café and guests can relax with a free newspaper in the stylish lounge, with its white leather sofas, where Wi-Fi is available for an extra charge.
Another good choice, in my opinion.
